Alabama's 7th district is located on the western side of the state and is home to the cities Birmingham (200,000), Tuscaloosa (100,000), and Selma (17,000) 

Major industries & companies

Manufacturing and healthcare are key industries, yet the district struggles with higher-than-average unemployment rates and lower median incomes. This district is also home to the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

Demographics

The district's population is predominantly African American, making it a stronghold of Democratic support in a largely Republican state. This demographic landscape has shaped its political leanings, with a significant majority voting for Democratic candidates in national elections. For instance, in the 2020 Presidential election, the district overwhelmingly supported Biden. The district is predominantly Christian and of the Baptist denomination.

The 2022 Elections: A Recap During the 2022 election cycle, Rep. Sewell stood out once again securing her position with a substantial margin of victory of nearly 30 points. This margin was due in large part to Sewell not running against a "quality candidate". Her opponent, Beatrice Nichols, had never ran for office prior to the 2022 election, and her campaign Twitter account currently has 86 followers.
